Vietnamese cakes featuring the Dragon fruit!

My new favourite fruit (since my most recent visit to Vietnam) is the Dragon fruit. Its has the most magnificent looking textured pink skin, and the most interesting and beautiful flesh!
The bottom pic is the whole fruit and the third pic (which was my breakfast snack) shows a slice of dragon fruit.

Then, on my last day in Saigon I spotted these amazing cakes, complete with dragon fruit decoration on top.
Mmmmmmmmm, my mouth is watering again as my mind drifts back to that wonderful day ....
Don't you think these look just incredible???!! and why can't I get this fruit in Brisbane???!
Quick reminder - my giveaway is drawn tomorrow night! Automatic entry to all blog followers :-)

Hi Sophie,
I so agree!! It doesnt really have that much of a taste actually, and it really looks much more spectacular than it tastes, but its soft, and maybe sort of like a pear but not so sweet???!! So hard to describe .... maybe another reader can help who's tried dragonfruit!

Hi Karen,
Me and Beng haven't really tasted the fruit, or if we had, we couldn't really remember, but I googled it and found these description to be helpful:

"The taste is also fairly melon-like, in that it is bland. Bland, bland, bland and somewhat sweet."

"a bit like melon or kiwi ... actually the taste is very bland considering how exciting it looks!"

"Sure, they look like something from outer space, but its frighteneing facade belies a wonderful taste for which the word "subtlety" was created."
"Nose: A very clean and subdued aroma, unlike other fruits. The best I could come up with is sweetened celery or very subdued kiwi.
Taste: It's texture is very odd. You can spoon the meat of the fruit out like a melon. It's texture is a bit granular in a veggie kind of way. Its taste? Like a lightly sweetened tapioca. It's also quite watery."

Hi Mel & Beng,
Thanks so much for all the info! I thought you might have these fruits in Indonesia and Malaysia. And I'm pretty sure too they wouldn't be in Canada where you are currently living!! Maybe its just a Vietnam fruit?? Such a mystery, but I wish it was a Brisbane fruit too.
Cheers!
